SledClub.com News: Cody Borchers Interview
By: SledClub.com

                                                    Cody Borchers

Age: 29
Residing:
Calgary, AB
Sponsors: A&E Racing, Ski-doo, Martin Chrysler, Slednecks, Blue Marble Oil, RK Tek, Bulldog
Decks, Dyno Port, Fly racing, HMK, OGIO, Fox Helmets, MBC, Oakley, AMP.

What got you into sledding and how long have you been doing it for?

My buddy Pat and his family. I use to live in Sherwood Park, AB and I
would hang out at his house whenever I could. His family had a bunch of
sleds and I was allowed to come over and enjoy. It continued from there.  Then my
family moved to Cochrane, AB.   My brother and I worked to save up enough
money to buy XLT Polaris'.  We met a couple guy's in a local riding area
near Cochrane. They saw that we had enough talent to take us to Golden, BC.
And that was the first time in the mountains. Ever since then we just
couldn't get enough.  Now here I am.

What kind of sled/s did you ride this year and what mods did you do to it/
them?

I have 2 sleds this season and they are 07 Race chassis' with 800 Ski-doo
power plants. One has a RT Tek piston head kit with a Dyno Port pipe and
silencer that works amazing. It sure makes a difference from stock. The
other one has a 06 power tek 800 that is stock with a Dyno port pipe and
silencer. With a couple of little tricks and that’s it.........(top secret)
Haha!!!

You had an early season injury.  What happened?

I broke my Rt Radius and wrist. I had a plate and 8 screws put in. That was
pretty sh**ty. It happen December 8 in Colorado at the Compound. I was
trying to learn freestyle. I over jumped the landing, landed flat and snap!

This started your season off on a bad note. Were you still able to reach
all your goals for the year?

Yes it was hard to take, I love all times of the winter and I missed out on
a lot of early season riding. I started riding mid February and battled
cloudy days after days. It took awhile to get the confidence back, but I
have been able to do everything I wanted to accomplish.

                                                                                                          DomG Photo

You just finished sledding in Whistler.  Who where there with and
how did that go for you?

Whistler was awesome this year, I got to ride with Rob Alford, Geoff Kyle,
Ray Archer, Chris Brown, Chris Burandt, Cory Davis, Randy Sherman and Dan
Treadway. It was a good time and there were a couple ups and downs, but that
is a part of sledding.

What videos can we look out for in seeing you in this year?

Slednecks 10, Frontier Films, maybe Matchstick and maybe On The Pipe, we’ll
see about those. It would be sweet to be in a Ski Video, and Moto Video.

Where did you get to sled this winter?

Revelstoke BC, Whistler BC and Colorado.

Do you stay at Rob Alfords bed and breakfast when you’re  in Revy?

Oh for sure, it’s a really nice place to stay. Rob always invites me.

I hear he can cook a pretty mean breakfast. Is this true?

Rob cooks a mean one.  Then I have to clean up the mess....Haha. Robby makes
it a good visit for all his guests!

What would you pick if you could only choose one;  Deep pow descents, big
drops or huge booters?

Oh man. I love it all too much to choose one.

What about between gnarly flips or tweaked out whips?

Well gnarly flips are ballz and they’re pretty wild. Tweaked out whips are
the funnest things to do, I can't get enough of them. There's no other
feeling then throwing a big whip and being upside down.

You have been tweaking those whips out pretty good lately!  any secrets?

Thanks, I have been trying to get better at them. It takes practice and
practice for me.

What do you think about the new 2008 Rev XP?  And would you consider
riding on one next year?

I have ordered 2 for next year. Ski-doo has changed snowmobiling again. I
want to be on them as soon as possible. They look cool. Can’t wait!

Any advice you can give to someone before heading into the backcountry?

Yes, Avalanche gear and take a course as well.  Make sure you know how to use it!
Because the only survival out there is you and your group! Make sure to be
prepared for anything. Bring things to keep warn and be prepared to stay
over night. Things can change so fast while being out there.  Be sure to bring lots of
water and food,  your buddy might forget his....... Use your Head,
common sense and have fun!

Any words of wisdom or quotes to live by?

Work Hard and Play Harder. Treat people the way you want to be treated..

Any last comments or people you want to give thanks to?

Thanks to all my sponsors and everybody that makes it possible for me to do
this.

Thanks for your time Cody

No problem,

Thank you.

A SledClub Interview With Ross Mercer

Residing: Whitehorse, Yukon

When you planned on going for the record, did you ever second guess or ask yourself is this actually possible or can my sled even go fast enough?

Not really. I knew I could do it, I actually thought my sled would be plenty
fast enough, but because of the elevation and temperatures it was actually
very close. I was hitting the ramp at full speed at the end with a huge
in run.

Did you do any special training or mods to your sled before going for the
record distance jump?

No. On the first day i was hitting the ramp full speed and not going far
enough, about 246. For the second day I geared my sled up, put on a
lightweight can and took the foam out of my airbox to try to make it faster.
We also extended the run in and for the last jump that i broke the record on
we had the entire inrun salted so it was frozen and hard, which made a big
difference.

What type of sled were you riding while going for the record jump?

I rode my 2007 Skidoo Rev Race chassis with a stock 800 engine. It is a
great sled and it worked perfectly for this jump.

Was there any support or sponsorship from them for the jump?

Yeah, Ski-Doo really helped me out this year. They hooked me up with a
couple of new 2007 sleds which have been great all season.

In general, do you think there should be more support from snowmobile
manufactures for the riders that are pushing the limits of the sport?

Well, the more support the riders get the more they can work at pushing the
limits of the sport. The last couple years have been really great for the
sport. There have been a number of events that have really pushed it into
the mainstream. RedBull has done events all over the world, the event in Red
Square Moscow, the Fuel and Fury event in Alaska last year etc, as well as
the fact that freestyle sledding was a gold medal event at the winter X
games this year have all brought it to the worlds attention. The
manufacturers are definately noticing us now and stepping up to the plate. I
am really excited to be working with SKi-Doo and hope that freestyle can
become a big part of their advertising, the way racing is.

How many paramedics were on stand by while you were going for the record?

I dont know. There was an ambulance standing by and a few people who were
there to deal with any kind of situation that might arise. It was reasuring
to have them there for sure.

What was your pre jump meal?

Well, I had a good crash in Slovenia about 5 days prior to my record
attempt, so I was really sore going into this. On the first day I ate 2 bags
of chips and 12 ibuprofins all day and had a couple RedBulls. The second day
I dont remember what I ate, a sandwich or a muffin or something i think.
lots of ibuprofins and RedBulls as well of course!

Now that you are in the Guinness Book of World Records have you started
getting love letters on Sledclub.com from all the hotties?

Not really but maybe things will  pick up here soon. Maybe this interview
will help.

I hear you were using a radar gun, how fast were you clocked at before
hitting the jump?

79 mph or so. Probably about 80 off the ramp, I held it pinned all the way
up the ramp.

What video/s can we look out for in seeing your record jump in?

It will be in SledNecks 10, Two Stroke Cold Smoke 10, I think its going to
be in the next Nitro Circus as well.

Being from the Yukon/Canada, what's the stupidest question a fan has asked
you about where your from?

Well, i dont know. Yesterday I went through the drive through at
McDonalds and got asked if it was for here or to go. There are lots of
stupid questions. It seems that a lot of people think the Yukon is in
Alaska. I am actually really surprised when I am travelling how many people
actually do know where the Yukon is.

Anyone you want to thank for helping making this event happen?

Yeah I would like to thank all my sponsors of course for their great support
this season. Everyone who was a part of this did a great job and worked very
hard to make it happen. Chris and Clayton at the compound for all their
work. I guess my biggest thanks has to go to RedBull for investing so much
in me and making all this happen. All the encouragement and props from
people back home and from around Canada go a long way too, it's cool to hear
from people who are stoked on what i am doing. I like to think I am making
Canadians proud.

That you are indeed!
Keep up the good work! We look forward in seeing you keep pushing the sport and  bringing it to new levels!

Ross Mercer of Whitehorse, Yukon, jumps 80.3m (263.5’), breaking previous record of 74.6m (245’)

Steamboat Springs, Colorado, March 11 – Canadian Ross Mercer took snowmobiling to new heights today by establishing a new world record of 80.3m for longest snowmobile ramp jump, surpassing the previous record of 74.6m. Mercer performed the jump at The Compound, the world’s largest snowmobile terrain park, located in Steamboat Springs, Colorado. An official world-record attempt, Mercer’s accomplishment was verified by Landmark Surveyors, and has been filed with Guinness World Records.

“I just went as fast as my sled would go, and I exceeded my expectations,” said Mercer. “My goal today was 250 ft., but going into this I really didn’t know what to expect. Once you get out here those numbers get pretty big when you’re trying to do them on a snow machine.”

Born in the former mining town of Cassiar, BC, and now residing and training in Whitehorse, Yukon, Mercer has taken advantage of his natural hometown environs to emerge as Canada’s best freestyle sled-X rider, and is considered among the world’s elite. As a discipline, freestyle sled-x has risen from a scattered group of amateurs to one of the fastest growing winter sports, generating worldwide audiences everywhere from the Winter X-Games to Red Bull Revolution on Machines in Moscow, which drew over 30,000 fans to Red Square.

Added Mercer: “I’m just really happy to be part of the process and pushing the sport to new levels. I’m looking forward to going home, celebrating and resting.”

Mercer’s feat comes after months of planning and collaboration with sponsor Red Bull. Performed on a 2007 Ski-Doo race chassis with an 800 engine, the world record jump came after a methodical training program where Mercer gradually increased his speed and the distance of the ramp from the landing.

“The radar gun was key because we started close up and then moved back 10 feet at a time, keeping careful track of my speed and making sure there were no surprises,” continued Mercer. “It was very systematic and I didn’t have a bad landing the entire time.”

For those that missed it, here is some results and facts.

This year the championships took place in the mountains of Vermont.  At Stratton Mountain Resort.

First off, Shaun White broke all known snowboarding records when he won the slopestyle event.  The slopestyle victory for the red tomato was his 12 consective win.  The kid is on fire.Volvo put two C70 convertibles up for the most valuable rider award.  Can you guess what male won?  Shaun White got a new ride as well as Hana Beamen.  Ski-Doo also put to new sleds up for grabs for the Outstanding Rookie Award which went out to Chas Guldemond (who almost took top spot from Shaun...) and Ellery Hollingsworth.  Mathieu Crepel was crowned the global ticket to ride (TTR) tour men's champion.  Congrats Mathieu.

The Burton Open started off Friday night with the Quarter Pipe.  It was a night session which meant that the spectors stood out in the freezing cold to cheer on the riders. Danny Davis won it for the mens and Hana Beamen for the females.  Pat Moore and Junko Asazuma grabbed the highest air to take home $2,500 each.

Saturday was halfpipe contest with something over 15,000 spectators out helping the vibe for the riders.  Shaun White looking like he was still in Torino took home first place and Torah Bright winning her first ever US Open medal took home first for the females.

Sunday, the last day of the championships, hosted the final contest.  Slopestyle was once again taken down by Shaun White.  Chaz Guldemond almost gave Shaun a run for his money placing second and Jussi Oksanen won the Snickers Best Trick for $5,000 as well as placed third.  Young 17 year old Spencer O'Brien did a repeat of last year to finish just behind Hana Beamen for second place and super young 15 year old Jamie Anderson took home third place.  Tara Dakides won the Snickers Best Trick with a backflip melon grab for $5,000.

My Journal: Cougar
By: sszark

Finally! Enough snow to go out snowmachining! And it's still snowing and is supposed to be snowing all day tomorrow too! The sad irony in this is that Lizard's Ski-Doo took a crap on him today. Poor boy... he's been waiting for the snow all year and it finally comes as his MXZ snaps the drive chain...

My sister bought herself an old John Deere snowmachine a while back too... one of the first models ever produced. It's gotta be from way back in the 60's... she's so proud of the little antique.

Speaking of which, ha! I'm quite possibly through with that damn 1983 Cheetah 440! My dad got sick of me bugging him about his Panther 550, and he started looking at this little 1994 Cougar for sale. He has a thing for Arctic Cats... I'm not badmouting them, afterall... the only Arctic Cat I've had a problem with is that Cheetah.

Better a sled to ride (except the Cheetah) then none at all, right?

IVE RIDDEN 3 ARCTIC CATS IN MY LIFE, THEY WENT LIKE THIS. THE 93 440 JAG WAS THE MOST NUTLESS 440 IVE EVER RIDDEN, THE 95 WILDCAT WAS COMFY, BUT IT BROKE DOWN 3 TIMES IN 2 DAYS, THE REWIND STARTER SPRING BROKE, THE CARB FROZE, AND THE PIECE OF JUNK DIED ON THE TRAIL AND WOULDNT RESTART, HENCE THE BROKEN REWIND. AND LAST I RODE A 98 ZR 800. IT BACKFIRED THROUGH THE CARB AND CAUGHT FIRE. BUT HEY EVERYBODY LOVES THEM. THEN I BUY THIS BEAT 89 400 INDY, I POUNDED THAT f*ckING THING A WHOLE SEASON, IT NEVER BROKE DOWN ONCE. OTHER THAN WHEN I DID SOMETHING STUPID AND BROKE IT MYSELF. SINCE THEN, I HAVE RIDDEN A COUPLE SKI-DOOS AND ALOT OF POLARIS. I HAVE NEVER HAD THE MAGNATUDE OF PROBLEMS THAT I SAW WITH THE f*ckING JUNK CATS. SO THERES THE STORY OF THE NAME
