SledClub.com News: Cody Borchers Interview
By: SledClub.com

                                                    Cody Borchers

Age: 29
Residing:
Calgary, AB
Sponsors: A&E Racing, Ski-doo, Martin Chrysler, Slednecks, Blue Marble Oil, RK Tek, Bulldog
Decks, Dyno Port, Fly racing, HMK, OGIO, Fox Helmets, MBC, Oakley, AMP.

What got you into sledding and how long have you been doing it for?

My buddy Pat and his family. I use to live in Sherwood Park, AB and I
would hang out at his house whenever I could. His family had a bunch of
sleds and I was allowed to come over and enjoy. It continued from there.  Then my
family moved to Cochrane, AB.   My brother and I worked to save up enough
money to buy XLT Polaris'.  We met a couple guy's in a local riding area
near Cochrane. They saw that we had enough talent to take us to Golden, BC.
And that was the first time in the mountains. Ever since then we just
couldn't get enough.  Now here I am.

What kind of sled/s did you ride this year and what mods did you do to it/
them?

I have 2 sleds this season and they are 07 Race chassis' with 800 Ski-doo
power plants. One has a RT Tek piston head kit with a Dyno Port pipe and
silencer that works amazing. It sure makes a difference from stock. The
other one has a 06 power tek 800 that is stock with a Dyno port pipe and
silencer. With a couple of little tricks and that’s it.........(top secret)
Haha!!!

You had an early season injury.  What happened?

I broke my Rt Radius and wrist. I had a plate and 8 screws put in. That was
pretty sh**ty. It happen December 8 in Colorado at the Compound. I was
trying to learn freestyle. I over jumped the landing, landed flat and snap!

This started your season off on a bad note. Were you still able to reach
all your goals for the year?

Yes it was hard to take, I love all times of the winter and I missed out on
a lot of early season riding. I started riding mid February and battled
cloudy days after days. It took awhile to get the confidence back, but I
have been able to do everything I wanted to accomplish.

                                                                                                          DomG Photo

You just finished sledding in Whistler.  Who where there with and
how did that go for you?

Whistler was awesome this year, I got to ride with Rob Alford, Geoff Kyle,
Ray Archer, Chris Brown, Chris Burandt, Cory Davis, Randy Sherman and Dan
Treadway. It was a good time and there were a couple ups and downs, but that
is a part of sledding.

What videos can we look out for in seeing you in this year?

Slednecks 10, Frontier Films, maybe Matchstick and maybe On The Pipe, we’ll
see about those. It would be sweet to be in a Ski Video, and Moto Video.

Where did you get to sled this winter?

Revelstoke BC, Whistler BC and Colorado.

Do you stay at Rob Alfords bed and breakfast when you’re  in Revy?

Oh for sure, it’s a really nice place to stay. Rob always invites me.

I hear he can cook a pretty mean breakfast. Is this true?

Rob cooks a mean one.  Then I have to clean up the mess....Haha. Robby makes
it a good visit for all his guests!

What would you pick if you could only choose one;  Deep pow descents, big
drops or huge booters?

Oh man. I love it all too much to choose one.

What about between gnarly flips or tweaked out whips?

Well gnarly flips are ballz and they’re pretty wild. Tweaked out whips are
the funnest things to do, I can't get enough of them. There's no other
feeling then throwing a big whip and being upside down.

You have been tweaking those whips out pretty good lately!  any secrets?

Thanks, I have been trying to get better at them. It takes practice and
practice for me.

What do you think about the new 2008 Rev XP?  And would you consider
riding on one next year?

I have ordered 2 for next year. Ski-doo has changed snowmobiling again. I
want to be on them as soon as possible. They look cool. Can’t wait!

Any advice you can give to someone before heading into the backcountry?

Yes, Avalanche gear and take a course as well.  Make sure you know how to use it!
Because the only survival out there is you and your group! Make sure to be
prepared for anything. Bring things to keep warn and be prepared to stay
over night. Things can change so fast while being out there.  Be sure to bring lots of
water and food,  your buddy might forget his....... Use your Head,
common sense and have fun!

Any words of wisdom or quotes to live by?

Work Hard and Play Harder. Treat people the way you want to be treated..

Any last comments or people you want to give thanks to?

Thanks to all my sponsors and everybody that makes it possible for me to do
this.

Thanks for your time Cody

No problem,

Thank you.

A SledClub Interview With Ross Mercer

Age: 25
Residing: Whitehorse, Yukon
Sponsors:  -RedBull
                  -SKi-Doo
                  -Oakley
                  -Yukon Honda
                  -Taits Trailer sales

                  -SCS Racing
                  -BullDog Sled Decks
                  -Planet Powersports

When you planned on going for the record, did you ever second guess or ask yourself is this actually possible or can my sled even go fast enough?

Not really. I knew I could do it, I actually thought my sled would be plenty
fast enough, but because of the elevation and temperatures it was actually
very close. I was hitting the ramp at full speed at the end with a huge
in run.

Did you do any special training or mods to your sled before going for the
record distance jump?

No. On the first day i was hitting the ramp full speed and not going far
enough, about 246. For the second day I geared my sled up, put on a
lightweight can and took the foam out of my airbox to try to make it faster.
We also extended the run in and for the last jump that i broke the record on
we had the entire inrun salted so it was frozen and hard, which made a big
difference.

What type of sled were you riding while going for the record jump?

I rode my 2007 Skidoo Rev Race chassis with a stock 800 engine. It is a
great sled and it worked perfectly for this jump.

Was there any support or sponsorship from them for the jump?

Yeah, Ski-Doo really helped me out this year. They hooked me up with a
couple of new 2007 sleds which have been great all season.

In general, do you think there should be more support from snowmobile
manufactures for the riders that are pushing the limits of the sport?

Well, the more support the riders get the more they can work at pushing the
limits of the sport. The last couple years have been really great for the
sport. There have been a number of events that have really pushed it into
the mainstream. RedBull has done events all over the world, the event in Red
Square Moscow, the Fuel and Fury event in Alaska last year etc, as well as
the fact that freestyle sledding was a gold medal event at the winter X
games this year have all brought it to the worlds attention. The
manufacturers are definately noticing us now and stepping up to the plate. I
am really excited to be working with SKi-Doo and hope that freestyle can
become a big part of their advertising, the way racing is.

How many paramedics were on stand by while you were going for the record?

I dont know. There was an ambulance standing by and a few people who were
there to deal with any kind of situation that might arise. It was reasuring
to have them there for sure.

What was your pre jump meal?

Well, I had a good crash in Slovenia about 5 days prior to my record
attempt, so I was really sore going into this. On the first day I ate 2 bags
of chips and 12 ibuprofins all day and had a couple RedBulls. The second day
I dont remember what I ate, a sandwich or a muffin or something i think.
lots of ibuprofins and RedBulls as well of course!

Now that you are in the Guinness Book of World Records have you started
getting love letters on Sledclub.com from all the hotties?

Not really but maybe things will  pick up here soon. Maybe this interview
will help.

I hear you were using a radar gun, how fast were you clocked at before
hitting the jump?

79 mph or so. Probably about 80 off the ramp, I held it pinned all the way
up the ramp.

What video/s can we look out for in seeing your record jump in?

It will be in SledNecks 10, Two Stroke Cold Smoke 10, I think its going to
be in the next Nitro Circus as well.

Being from the Yukon/Canada, what's the stupidest question a fan has asked
you about where your from?

Well, i dont know. Yesterday I went through the drive through at
McDonalds and got asked if it was for here or to go. There are lots of
stupid questions. It seems that a lot of people think the Yukon is in
Alaska. I am actually really surprised when I am travelling how many people
actually do know where the Yukon is.

Anyone you want to thank for helping making this event happen?

Yeah I would like to thank all my sponsors of course for their great support
this season. Everyone who was a part of this did a great job and worked very
hard to make it happen. Chris and Clayton at the compound for all their
work. I guess my biggest thanks has to go to RedBull for investing so much
in me and making all this happen. All the encouragement and props from
people back home and from around Canada go a long way too, it's cool to hear
from people who are stoked on what i am doing. I like to think I am making
Canadians proud.

That you are indeed!
Keep up the good work! We look forward in seeing you keep pushing the sport and  bringing it to new levels!

                               Interview With Rob Alford

Where did you grow up?
 Qualicum Beach, Vancouver Island.

You lived in Whistler before Revelstoke; what area do you prefer for sledding and why?
Both Whistler and Revelstoke have good points to them. Whistler has easier access to the goods but not as good snow.

Out of all the areas you have sledded whats your favorite place?
I have a new area in Revelstoke that is my favorite so far.  It is right by Zipper Mouth Creek.

What is Mt. Mackenzie Log Chalet?
It is a  deluxe bed and breakfast log home in Revelstoke which is covered in fresh pow right now. Check out www.logchalet.com  for more details.

I hear you commercial fish.  What is that like?
It pays the bills and it has some challenges that keeps it interesting.

What type of sledding impresses you most?
Well I am really impressed with the crazy airs those guys in Alaska are doing these days, and of course the big mountain pow riding.

Besides sledding what other activities keep you busy?
I do a lot of downhill biking, dirtbiking and some surfing.

What are your plans for this winter?
Send some airs and rip some pow!

Any sponsors or thanks you want to send out?
Blue Marble Oil, Fly Racing, Bull Dog truck Decks, A@E Motorsports and The Sled Shed.

(i got my permit 2 days before i was driving illegally with no parent that is)         On September 9th, 2004, I had just got out of school, took my friend Sadie home, and headed to my g'maws house where I live. I ran in the house, got some money of course, and was going into town for a job interview and to get my g'parents something to eat. My parents house is a mile down the road, so as I passed by, I noticed one of my old buddies was outside with my dad. My dad owns a body shop(he's a mechanic), so usually when I pass by, there are a lot of people out there I know. I went about 2 miles down the road after passing my parents, and turned around at a spot I was soon to hate. I went back up the road to my dad's. I got out and talked for about 5 minutes, then got back in my car to back it in time for the job. I remember the last thing I did was put 'goodies' by Ciara in my cd player. I had just got a new system, so it sounded really good. A beautiful day was soon to end ugly.

As I was going down the road, 2 miles, I couldn't see around a curve which a tree was laying across both sides of the road around. The tree was across the road in the same spot I had just turned around to go back to my dad's. My car hit the tree at about 60-65mph, spun around clock wise, and hit another tree over the side of the road. As the back drivers side hit the tree, I was thrown 30 ft out my window.

My car went for another ride, and when I woke up, it was facing me, looking like it had tried to come down the hill after me. An older couple had found me, woke me up, and asked how they could contact my parents.

I kept trying to stand up, but my hair was stuck in the tree, and neither of my legs were working. I don't even remember seeing a lot of blood. Moments later, my dad finally got there. Everyone told him not to go down and see me, but he wouldn't listen. He saw my car before he saw me, and he was thinking he wouldn't see me alive over the hill. He told me when he first saw me, I was laying so twisted, it looked like I had lost my left leg. He came over the hill and asked me if I was okay. He said, "she looked up and me with her big blue eyes and said, 'Hi Daddy.'"

At first everyone had thought I'd broken my neck from being thrown. My hair was still stuck in the tree, so I couldn't lay my head down to rest. My dad then pulled out his pocket knife and cut my hair free. (I didn't find that out till later)

I was stat flighted to Vanderbilt Hospital in Nashville. Vandy is about an hour from where I live. It took 3 days in the hospital till I got my first surgery. I had shattered my ankle, broke my leg, broke my pelvic bone in 4 places, and had a minor spinal fracture.

When I awoke from surgery, I had fixators(10 pins going through skin surface into my bones) across my pelvic area, and one connecting my leg, ankle, and below my knee together. It was the most painful thing ever in my life.

I was kept in the hospital for 8 days. For 8-9 weeks, I was left with the fixators still in. I couldn't get in a car, or go anywhere unless by ambulance.

In November 2004, I had my second surgery. They took out my fixators, and put 7 screws, a large metal plate, took a bone graph from under my knee and placed it in my ankle. The pain after this surgery was almost just as worse. It didn't last as long though.

It's now 01/25/05. I went to the doctor again today. I'm now on 65lbs weight on my leg. In 3 weeks, I'll be walking again. Hopefully. If any of you are wondering if I had my seatbelt on, No. If I would have had it on, I'd be dead. My car's roof was so bent down on my side, that it would have took my head off.

Here are some pictures if you're curious what the car, and myself looked like.

Before-

After-

Me after-

Yet I still had a smile on my face :)

UPDATE: I started walking again sometime in late Feb. of 05' Things are better of course, but my leg will never be the same again. Due to breaking my hip bone in 4 places, my left leg is now almost half an inch shorter than the right, causing me to have a small limp. Nothing a shoe lift can't fix. I can't walk far distances without not being able to walk the next day. Thats because I lost all the bone/tissue in my ankle. I'm very happy I can at least walk again though. My heart goes out to those who won't ever walk again, or those who have lost someone. People wonder how I survived such a bad accident. To tell you the truth.. I have no clue. I really love recieving all your messages about stories, or just nice comments to me. So, keep them coming.

Update: It has been a miracle in March of 05' i started walking perfectly again no more limp or anything so now i can continue on with my life as normal

Never take life for granted. TRUST ME.  You never know what you have till it's gone.

Subject: Read Alone----Especially the poem
Whether you believe in the cases or not, that is up to you.
READ ALONE.....ESPECIALLY THE POEM
CASE 1: Kelly Sedey had one wish, for her boyfriend of three years, David Marsden, to propose to her. Then one day when she was out to lunch David proposed!
She accepted, but then had to leave because she had a meeting in 20 min.
When she got to her office; she noticed on her computer she had some e-mail. She checked it, the usual stuff from her friends, but then she saw one that she had never gotten before. It was this poem. She simply deleted it without even reading all
of it. BIG MISTAKE! Later that evening, she received a phone call from
the police. It was about DAVID! He had been in an accident with a
man and an 18 wheeler. He didn't survive.
CASE 2: Take Katie Robinson .
She received this poem and being the believer that she was, she
sent it to a few of her friends but didn't have enough e-mail
addresses to send out the full 10 that you
must. Three days later,
Katie went to a masquerade ball. Later that
night when she left to
get to her car to go home, she was killed on the spot by a hit-and-run drunk driver.
CASE 3: Richard S. Willis sent this poem out within 45 minutes of reading
it. Not even 4 hours later walking along the street to his new job
interview with a really big company, when he ran into Cynthia Bell,
his secret love for 5 years. Cynthia came up to him and told him of
her passionate crush on him that she had had on him for 2 years. Three days later, he proposed to her and they got married.
Cynthia and Richard are still married with
three children, happy as ever! This is the poem: Around the corner I have a friend,
In this great city that has no end,
Yet the days go by and weeks rush on,
And before I know it, a year is gone.
And I never see my old friends face,
For life is a swift and terrible race,
He knows I like him just as well,
As in the days when I rang his bell.
And he rang mine but we were younger then,
And now we are busy, tired men.
Tired of playing a foolish game,
Tired of trying to make a name.
"Tomorrow" I say! "I will call on Jim
Just to show that I'm thinking of him."
But tomorrow comes and tomorrow goes,
And distance between us grows and grows.
Around the corner, yet miles away,
"Here's a telegram sir," "Jim died today."
And that's what we get and deserve in the end. Around the corner, a vanished friend.
Remember to always say what you mean.
If you love someone, tell them.
Don't be afraid to express yourself. Reach out and tell someone what they mean to you. Because when you decide that it is the right time it might be too late.Seize the day. Never have regrets. And most importantly, stay close to your friends and family, for they have helped make you the person that you are today.
